IN THEIR WORDS

“When it came time to select a wedding location, all we knew was that we wanted a small beach wedding in a state in where same sex marriage was legal (at this point, marriage equality was not legal nationwide). Jess searched online for a beautiful beach with an equally beautiful beach house to host our families, and she found the Crystal Coast and Pierless Too. It was obvious that North Carolina was the choice.

“Planning a wedding from afar is no easy feat. Initially, we were concerned that some of our vendor inquiry emails wouldn’t be well accepted. We were up front about being a same sex couple, but that didn’t turn out to be a big issue. The ones we hired are absolutely great people to work with, and their enthusiasm was never-ending.

“Ours was an evening wedding, and we had the day to prepare the ceremony and reception areas, as well as ourselves. Earlier in the week, we instructed our guests to find a seashell for our beach ceremony. They wrote a wish for our future in the shell and brought it to us one by one.

“After the ceremony, we made our way to the oceanfront pool deck, which was beautifully decorated for the reception. There was a delicious dinner and dancing to Sarah’s ultimate wedding playlist. Combining a party around a pool with some well-dressed and very energetic children leads to them jumping into the pool fully clothed. The kids loved it, and we loved watching their glee.

“Sarah’s sister had spent months compiling pictures of both brides for a slide show. We hadn’t seen many of these pictures of each other, and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane. We honored Sarah’s dad with a remembrance table. On the table was a personalized photo frame of Sarah and her dad with a beautiful orchid lei that was later delivered to the ocean in his honor.

“At the end of the night, we made it a point to thank our family for their love and support through the years, knowing that not everyone in a same sex relationship like ours is fortunate enough to have that. There were tears and hugs all around, followed by more great dance moves by all.”
